2017 Contest Terms

The No Borders writing contest is open from NOW to midnight on June 30th. We don’t care if you write prestigious literary fiction or cartoon space monkey horror just so long as it fits the theme and is written in English.

Only send stories of 2K-5K words. We prefer Standard Manuscript Format, because it’s much nicer when your eyes don’t bleed, and ask that you do not bombard us with 500 submissions, but we do accept multiple entries within reason.

Simultaneous submissions are not permitted at this time, being that we respond quickly. Please be patient, it’s part of being a writer. If you can’t wait, you might want to get out now :)

Rights

We retain 1st World Electronic and Publishing rights as well as anthology rights. Your submission is considered an acceptance of the terms. There is a 3$ fee to enter ($5 for 2 entries, $7 for 3 entries) We hate charging writers because we are writers but compensation for slush reading, organisation, and devotion to this competition makes it necessary and we've kept it as cheap as we can.

Judging and Judges

Each short story will be judged on the following:

  • Originality: scale 1-10
  • Technical Skills (grammar, sentence structure and all that junk we writers tend to hate, but is oddly important) 1-10
  • Best fit for the theme 1-10

All the judges pictures are in Black and White because Jessica is a professional and insisted that both Dante and Alex behave like professionals too :)

Jessica Marie Baumgartner

Jessica Marie Baumgartner - No borders short story competition

Jessica’s motto is: adventure first, then write! When not running around exploring nature, and chasing after two smaller versions of herself, she also has time to…feed the bunny.

Somehow she is able to squeak in professional editing services, and has authored Embracing Entropy and My Family Is Different.

Her non-fiction articles and speculative fiction stories have been featured in publications such as: Outposts of Beyond, Everyday Fiction, Circle Magazine, The Lorelei Signal, and many others. Find her at: Jessicamariebaumgartner.com

Dante Harker

Dante Harker - No borders short story competition

Dante's motto is: having adventures and then writing about them! (see how similar this is to Jessica's - not hard to see why they get on so well :)

There is a ton about Dante here - it's his site, so he has an about page already. Which is kind of cheating really.

Dante wrote is first novel at 19, it was just awful! In fact it never actually made it off his hard drive. Mostly his comma button was broken, which made the grammar in the novel just shocking. Thankfully, he's written several more since then - all full of commas.

Now a professional traveller and social media influencer, with two, every different, novels on their way to print very soon.

Alex Harker

Alex Harker - No borders short story competition

Alex's motto: Anything easy isn't worth doing!

Alex is head writer for Danteharker.com and his new site that's coming very soon, Recipe for Runners.

With a degree in Theatre and Media he has been involved in the arts since first stepping foot on stage at 8.

He is a qualified pastry chef, diving instructor and has visited more than 50 countries.

At some point in the future he plans on combining his love of travel and obsession with baking. Most likely into a cookbook, anything else would be too messy.

His current adventure can be found here
